From the Club Manager July 2021

There is a bit of a good news-bad news on Work Party hours. This year a few of you were planning on doing your hours during Sail School or the Harvest Regatta, which have both unfortunately been cancelled (that's the bad news). So instead of billing for unworked hours on August 1, we are extending the period in which those hours can be worked through August 31. We will be bill unworked hours at $30/hour on September 1 (that's the good news!). If you need to complete those hours, you have an opportunity at the Work Party scheduled for Saturday, July 24, beginning at 9:00 am.

Fun has been had at EYC! The deck party on June 19 where we celebrated the Commodoreship of Rob Moline was a ton of fun. I hope you made it. Party planners extraordinaire Katie Bloom O'Brien and Darcey Howard did a terrific job on a Cuba-inspired theme. July 4th was without fireworks this year, and the parade was admittedly a little short, but everyone had fun anyway thanks to Rae Anne Chamberlin and her crew. Our Midsummer Regatta on July 10-11 was great with lots of boats, good food, and enough wind to please everyone. Many thanks to Rex and Bonnie Ballenger as Regatta Chairs, and Richard and Marie Johnson on the food committee. Rich also was Race Committee chair and he hasn't lost a step in running races in the 22 months since our last regatta.

And fun will be had soon. The Concert by the Lake is on Sunday evening, August 1. This is a bring your own food and drink event with the club supplying the music. The Hilltop Big Band is on the agenda this year with our own Jim Martinez on trombone.

Sailing has been great, even with low water (and it is going down now at about three inches per week). Last Tuesday evening's Fun Race was the best ever by all accounts and Thursday racing is going strong.

Having said that, there are some obstacles to keeping the fun going. As if Covid and low lake levels weren't enough, this week the Oregon Health Authority put out a cyanobacteria alert which means stay out of the water if you can. Sail School, the Jim Skeen Youth Unregatta, and the Harvest Regatta have all been cancelled because of water levels and/or the cyanobacteria advisory. For a little while yet, though, we can still sail and spending time at the club.
