January 2019 Commodore's Corner

Happy New Year! This year I celebrated the new year on the East Coast, specifically Virginia Beach. It was 72 degrees and sunny, and I had the opportunity to spoil my grandson, which made the new year even better.

I am saddened to report that long-time member Fred Barker passed away over the holidays. There will be a Celebration of Life for Fred on February 2 at 1:00 pm at the club. Our hearts go out to the family.

The first—and perhaps only—free meal of the year is almost upon us. On Saturday, January 26 at 6:00 pm (note the time change!), the annual EYC Board of Trustees Chili Feed happens. Yes, everyone is invited, and yes the Board is preparing, serving, and cleaning up. Bring your appetite and your favorite beverage. Everything else will be provided. The Board does request your participation in voting for the best chili of the night, a highly coveted award by the Board members, which gives the winner bragging rights for the rest of the year.

Other items of interest for members include new fencing at the entrance after forty feet of our front fence was damaged by a pickup in December. Our security cameras have been updated so they see more clearly now than before, so smile when you come through the gate, you really are on camera. The Youth Sailing Dock project is coming along and I have been promised it will be completed for use by the time the season begins.

I would like to say Thank You to each member of the Board that serves with me. I would encourage members to do the same. They serve tirelessly for the needs of our club. I would also like to say Thank You for everyone that said yes, when I asked them to serve on a committee this year. I know you don’t have to, but again I really appreciate your support. I also challenge members to do the same, to step up and serve when asked—and even to step up when not asked. You will have fun and get to know more EYC members when you participate in EYC activities. Your first chance to get out and meet new people happens with the first Work Party on January 19 starting at 9:00 am. Come out, earn Work Party credit and enjoy meeting other club members.

Finally, the contest for the renaming of the Ship Shape Committee is completed. And we have a tie. Unbelievable, I know, but the announcement will be made at the Chili Feed, so please come.

I know EYC has a great year ahead and I look forward to seeing everyone again.
