July 2019 Commodore's Corner

What a wonderful and busy two weeks we have had at Eugene Yacht Club. If you did not have the opportunity to attend Sail School this year, you should definitely put this on your calendar for next year.  A big shout out and thank you to Katie Bloom O’Brien and Stephanie Lunceford for organizing and running a fun and educating Sail School. Enrollment for Sail School was up this year with 90 students. I would also like to thank Rich Johnson and the many volunteers for organizing the food for the week, Terri Ward and the rescue boat volunteers for keeping everyone safe, and the dozens of others who pitched in to help. There were so many memorable moments that happened during the week, but one special moment for me was the closing award banquet honoring Dick and Margaret Brust with an annual award to be given out each year in their name for volunteerism to Sail School.

The following week we celebrated July 4. This is the largest one-day event we host each year with 300-400 people on our grounds. Many thanks to Becky Barker and Heidi Leyba whose trip to New Orleans inspired this year’s theme. They cooked up Cajun Shrimp Boil for over 260 hungry guests. This must be a record for the 4th. Also, a big thank you to John and Susan Pfanner, and Susan Bloom who organized the adult social hour with the trailer group and the parade and encouraged so many people to get involved. Thanks to Glen Hughes and the fireworks crew for another epic (and safe) fireworks show. And thanks to all the folks who simply jumped in when they saw a need, especially the youth and adults who helped in the kitchen.

Last Saturday EYC brought back the Jungle Cruise. Thank you to John Ward, who organized this family oriented event and Randy and Lisa Smith who placed the inflatables animals in the jungle. As each boat motored by, the children had the opportunity to retrieve the inflatable animal.  After we made it through the jungle (tree) area, we rafted together for lunch and swimming.

I have appointed a small committee to head up our quest for new youth boats.  Dick Brust will chair the group made up of June Chamberlin, Matt Sprick, Ron Fish, and Annin Ramsing. We are planning a meeting on Saturday, August 24 at 3:00 pm. This meeting is open to all EYC members who are interested in providing input to what EYC will purchase.

The Board approved the purchase of three new Laser sails for our club boats. The Board also approved a new Welcome sign for our entrance gate that will say, “Welcome to EYC, Members only”. We feel that this might help decrease traffic of people who wander down the road, come to our gate and continue to walk through to get to the lake.
