March 2021 Commodore's Corner

Hello everyone. I hope last month was better for you than the one before. Seems to me that 2021 is going to be the year of “This month is better than last month.”

The Board will sponsor a “Racers” Zoom call later this month to give Racers, Committee, and Rescue Boat drivers a chance to give the EYC Board input prior the implementation of procedures designed to bring club racing back to life.  I have received just a few comments on how we should proceed. The Board is committed to offer a safe environment for members and we are willing to set up the ground rules. I am a believer if you enlist help from others most often someone has an idea that others had not considered.

Speaking of enlisting help, a big shout out to everyone who participated in a work party so far this year. Gary Powell provided the membership a superb slide show at the February membership meeting outlining what has been accomplished at the club this winter. There are many more projects that need to be completed before the lake fills, so please consider joining the work party scheduled on March 20.

Hopefully you all have submitted your moorage requests (deadline is this Sunday) and Port Captain Gordon Mattatall has helped you with your requests. It does not hurt to follow up with a email you have any questions.

Marty Parisien and the rest of the long range planning committee have come up with a long range capital expenditure plan. This valuable piece of information will help the club in prioritizing those long term and often expensive projects.

The Board has been discussing the club calendar and has decided on a plan for this year. for some members, our schedule may seem to be optimistic, and to others it will look pessimistic. If the membership is split 50/50, then the Board will be satisfied. Here are the changes we will be implementing:

April

  • Thursday racing will follow the same procedures as last year, with no race committee or rescue boats.

May

  • Formal Thursday Racing will begin with race committee and rescue with scoring.

  • We will not schedule the Memorial Day Regatta in May.

June

  • Thursday Racing continues and we would look into some weekend racing for members.

  • June 19 Opening of the Deck, Commodore Rob Moline's thank you, and 2020 awards. This will be our first club event with membership participation.

July

  • The Fourth of July will happen this year one way or another as the fireworks from last year will require a sendoff. Rae Ann Chamberlin is making plans for the day and Glen Hughes and his merry helpers will finally get to provide a great evening light show.

  • July 10 & 11 we will resurrect the Memorial Day Regatta, covid version

  • July 18-23 Sail School

  • July 24-25 Water Fest

  • July 31 will be our first non-zoom Potluck and general membership meeting.

August

  • August 1 Concert on the Lake

  • August 7 & 8 Live on the Edge Multi Hull regatta

  • August 13-15 Youth UnRegatta and Youth Weekend

  • August 21 & 22 Women’s Cup and possible Women’s Weekend

  • August 28 & 29 Harvest Regatta

September

  • September 5 Commodore’s Cup

As mentioned earlier, this proposed schedule could be considered cautious or optimistic. Only time will tell. Each month the information we receive is better than the month before, so I hope any changes to the schedule will involve moving forward, not back.

I know I have said this before, but I continue to be grateful for the kind comments the Board has received so far. Hopefully by next month a majority of our members will be given an opportunity to get their Covid vaccine shot. Until next month, be safe, wear your mask, and hope for better Covid news—and a full lake.
