April 2021 Commodore's Corner

Another month, and another month a bit closer to normal. I am very encouraged the way that Lane County has progressed in opening up businesses and getting Covid vaccines to its citizens. Even with vaccines being available, we can see that we are still a ways from the end of this pandemic. When I was asked to be Commodore I was aware of the challenges I would be facing—the same challenges that Rob Moline faced last year. Covid is obviously a concern, however I see progress and a light at the end of the tunnel.

Lake levels, however, are a different animal. At times I feel helpless and I ask all members to do their best rain dance this month. We really need those April showers.

On Tuesday, March 30, we held a Zoom meeting for racers and other interested parties. Because our Zoom social hours and general membership meetings have been lightly attended, my expectations were mixed when I signed on just before 7 pm. I was pleasantly surprised as members and racers joined the call. I estimated 30 people were on the Zoom call at one time or another. The discussion was lively and most viewers participated gave the Board useful insight into how we should organize our racing season.

The Board will communicate the procedures through the Bulletin newsletter, our Monday emails, signage, and email correspondence. As the county adjusts the health requirements, the Board will act accordingly. For now, these are our operating guidelines:

  • Anyone using club boats must wear a mask.

  • Masks are required by anyone using the docks, entering the clubhouse, or restrooms.

  • The Board strongly recommends that racers who are not part of a pod or have not all have received their vaccines wear a mask while racing. It will be at the decision of the skipper and crew whether or not everyone will wear a mask while on the water

  • Members shall wear a mask on club grounds when six foot distancing is not an option. The exception will be a family group, eating food or having something to drink while maintaining social distancing, or swimming in the swim area.

The Board is taking these steps to protect the club, its members and guests. The use of club boats and facilities is contingent on members following these guidelines. We have sacrificed much the last 13 months and we would all hate making a mistake this close to the end of this pandemic—a common sentiment that was echoed by all during our Zoom call. Taking steps to protect our fellow members was also voiced by all.

A big shout out to Kevin Dickey who time out from his very busy schedule to complete the gas plumbing to the barbecue. Another big shout out to those who participated in last months work party. Gary Powell provided the membership another superb slide show at the last membership meeting of all the work that is getting done. Pads have been poured to support the storage containers which have been moved to their permanent location. They are need of paint job for those of you who like to paint your way through work party requirements. More thanks go to Gary Powell who has been the proverbial squeaky wheel with the Army Corps of Engineers. After many phone calls, emails, and letters Gary has almost received permission to pour a concrete pad around the deck which will keep the stairs from touching the ground.

I have said this before and I'll say it again: I am thankful for the kind comments the Board continues to receive. Hopefully by next month a majority of our members will take the opportunity to get their Covid vaccine shot. Until then, be safe, wear your mask, and hope for better Covid news and a full lake.
