June 2021 Commodore's Corner

This past month, Eugene Yacht Club has experienced some highs and some lows.

Water Level
Lows: While the water level of the lake is low, at least it hasn’t gone down too much.
Highs: Some of the larger boats are in. Four Wavelength 24’s raced last Thursday.

Thursday Racing
Lows: Turnout has been less than usual.
Highs: I have been racing by myself in the PHRF class, but last Thursday there were five of us. It looks like I will have to sail better if I want to be in first place again.

Club Socializing
Lows: We said goodbye to a longtime member Ross Cooley on Memorial Day.
Highs: There were 40+ people in attendance. Gary Powell did his usual great job running the event. There was food and the first keg on the deck in a long, long while. Seeing friends face-to-face instead of looking into a 13” screen was greatly appreciated.

Fourth of July
Lows: The Army Corps of Engineers will not issue us a permit for the fireworks. Let’s just say the agencies involved were not as prepared as we were to put on a large event.
Highs: RaeAnne Chamberlin and her crew are working on a plan for non-firework Fourth of July activities and it should still be great day at EYC. If anything we will get home sooner.

Sail School
Lows: Most of the youth classes are full.
Highs: Most of the youth classes are full! We're pleased to be able to bring all these young sailors back for Sail School. There is still room in the Catamaran and Big Boat classes.

Youth Sailing Note: Last Saturday Janell Skeen (with help from many others) put on a youth event. Kids and adults had the opportunity to try out the new Opti’s and 420’s. At the same time, the advance rescue boat class was well-attended and feedback was positive.

Club Host Trailer
Lows: No bank will lend us the money for a replacement trailer—at least none that we could find.
Highs: The club has $20,000 for a down payment, and we are putting together a program where members will loan the club the balance. The trailer should be ordered by next week.

Potlucks
Lows: It has been a such a long time since we have been together for a pot luck and general membership meeting.
Highs: This month we will have a hybrid in-person and Zoom General Membership meeting. No potluck yet, but in the very near future we will be able to start taking bets on who will be first in line—Ernie, Gordon or Keith.
