July 2021 Commodore's Corner

It has been 40 days since the last club newsletter. What a change.

Many thanks to Katie Bloom O’Brien, Darcy Howard, and their crew getting the clubhouse cleaned and putting on a great event last month: Port of Call, Bienvenidos a Cuba, a party to celebrate 2020 Commodore Rob Moline, to present the 2020 club awards, and to break in the new deck with food, drink and live music. It was great to see everyone and have the club open again. 140 members signed up and many others came by to say thank you to our outgoing Rear Commodore Bill Boyce and last year's Commodore Rob Moline. Excellent food, drinks, and that highly energetic band made me wonder, should this be annual event? A get together when the weather is good, members haven’t left for vacation yet, and something separate from a regatta? I couldn’t be more pleased how this event turned out.

Congratulations to Pat Skeen who was awarded the Dave Brown Lifetime Service Award. Pat has been a constant contributor to the club and has chaired just about every event, including Sail School, plus time spent as a Board member and Commodore.

Chris Thomas accepted the Spencer Alexander award. Chris’s dedication to the teaching of sailing to youths and adults is greatly appreciated.

There was a slight mix-up in the Jack Culver Traveling Trophy. It was originally given to
Evert Slijper and Chip Balough, but after further investigation it was determined that the award should go to Marissa Balough who attend both MidWinters East and MidWinters West in 2020. Congratulations, Marissa.

Rob Moline (last year's Booby Hat award winner) gave himself the award again. I can’t remember the last time we had a back-to-back winner in that category. Really hoping Rob can find someone else to award it to in 2021—I'd hate to see him three-peat.

EYC's Fourth of July Celebration was a great event, even without the fireworks. Many thanks to Rae Anne Chamberlin and her helpers with putting on a great event. About a 100 meals were served. The lighted boat parade was a nice substitute to fireworks.

The MidSummer Regatta went without a hitch, if you choose to not consider low water, fires to the east and south plus possible harmful organisms in the water. In spite it being a little on the warm side, we had a turnout of 40 boats, including many out of town sailors. The wind gods produced excellent winds. Three races were completed each day. It was great seeing long time member Ernie Peterson (joined in 1970) back on the finish boat. Many thanks to Regatta Chairs Rex and Bonnie Ballenger, and their daughter Jennifer for all their efforts, and my wife Marie Johnson who prepared dinner.

The warm weather this year has put a premium on tree shade. With that in mind, and
taking into account many of our trees are getting old, the Board will look into adding more trees this fall in areas where there were trees at one time. By the swim area and in front of trailer row are where we are considering plantings.

Looking forward to seeing many of you at our first in-person and actual potluck in a long while on July 31, which will be followed by a general membership meeting.
